Farewell Harry Harrington
For the second year running the Carnival has been shocked by the sudden death of oneof our committee members.
Robin “Harry” Harrington passed away suddenly on July 13th aged 69. Our thoughts go out to his wife Gwen and family.
Harry was a committee member in the 1970s running the afternoon events on the playing field. He returned to the committee in the 2000s with Gwen to run the bingo, and has been an enthusiastic member ever since, serving as Chairman from 2010-2013 and as a vice chairman from then to date.
He had two great passions, Burnham Carnival and funfairs. He became involved with the Stevens Funfair and Thursday leading up to Carnival he would always say “have you seen the new rides yet ?” and we would both go down on that day and negotiate donations. This could take a couple of hours, not negotiating, just talking funfairs. It is through Harry that we have RAMPAGE (the Caribbean dancers) as part of the procession and to see Harry dancing in front of them was something else. Harry followed me as Chairman and together we fought a tiring battle to keep Burnham Carnival as an event in the face of Maldon District Council and Essex Police curtailing the event on safety grounds……the result is obvious.
Harry and Gwen have taken our Queen and Court to the other carnivals in the summer for 10 years or more so it wont be only in Burnham that Harry will be missed. Personally I will miss Harry greatly not only at Carnival–but as a true friend.
God bless Harry.
